Dear Parents,

Thank you very much for your patience during this ‚teacher transition‘.

I am happy to inform you that I have hired a new teacher, Stasia Czupryna (American), and she will begin on Monday 12.10. Miss Stasia has already spent some time at school and has seen a few lessons, and she is really excited to be joining LEAP and to start teaching the students! I will be helping in the classroom and getting her settled in next week.

Once her profile has been completed, you will be able to learn a little more about her on our Team page. Her email is now at the top of this page. Please continue to inform her in advance when your child will be absent, or to contact her with other questions about your child.

We will begin Unit 1 on Monday. If your child has missed any lessons during Unit 0, please make sure they have completed all exercises in their Student’s Book and Workbook pages 4-9.

The homework assigned on 5.10. (WB 10/11) does NOT need to be done.

This was Mr. Clay’s last class with the Blue Whales. Thank you for being great students!

Test: Unit 0 Test next Wednesday, 7.10.

Homework: Worksheet 1: Exercises 1,2. Worksheet 2: Exercise 1. Worksheet 3: Exercise 1.

Warm Up: We played another Wordwall game, this one about question words (what, who, when, why, how). Students read the questions and selected the correct question word that fit the situation.

Perfect Day (past tense): We wrote about our imaginary perfect days in the past. Student wrote 4 sentences in their Portfolio using the past tense. Some of us ate ramen, some of us watched our favorite movie on Netflix, some of us even met Ronaldo.

Games: We got to play several games to since we’ve finished the Unit 0 material. We played Heads Up for the first time. In Heads Up, student have a word on their forehead and their team must give them clues to guess the word without saying it to get a point. Students got into it, miming things like taking a selfie or closing a door.

We played a Baamboozle game called „Close Up Images“. Students were split into 2 teams. Each team was given an image zoomed in and had to guess what it was. Images included a strawberry, bubbles, snow, and a pencil.

Class Dojo: Students earned points for being quick to be ready for class and for completing their homework.

Reward: We played one round of Geoguessr, where we guessed Bangladesh and were in Sri Lanka. We then played a few rounds of „City of Pallermo“ (aka Werewolf). A few of the students played the narrators. The students started to build argument as to why they believed someone was or wasn’t the werewolf.

23.09.

Reminder: There is no class on Monday as it is a holiday.

Homework: Page 8,9: All. Due 30.09

Warm Up: We played our first Wordwall game. Students spun the wheel and practiced saying irregular verbs in the past tense. We then made example sentences with the verbs in past tense. Example: Yesterday, I went to football practice.

Super Minds: We read the story on Pages 8 and 9. We learned what an experiment is, what we do with instructions (read, follow), and identified several of our vocab words in the story (powder, liquid, test tube, goggles, explosion). We did part of Activity 5. It was difficult but the Blue Whales got there in the end. At the end the story, the 3 adventurers‘ experiment goes awry and they walk into a mysterious portal. Where will it take them?

Games: We played „Yesterday I…“. In this game students gather in a circle and pass a ball or a microphone, from one student to the next. The first student says something they did yesterday (can be made-up), like „Yesterday, I ate pizza“. The next student says what the previous student said and then adds another sentence. This chaining continues until the last student must repeat what everyone said! It’s a good way to practice the past tense.

We also played a vocab-review game, „Hand Slap“. Student sit in a circle with interlocked hands and take turns gently slapping the hand of the next student while saying the letters of a vocab word one at time. For example: Bubbles – B-U-B-B-L-E-S. This helped the students to better understand tricky spellings like „instructions“ or „liquid“.

Reward: We played a few rounds of Geoguessr (corrected guessing Vietnam and Albania). We then played Werewolf for the first time. We worked out how to play and will be ready to have a smooth game next time. In Werewolf, students sit in a circle and there is one moderator. The moderator chooses roles: Werewolf, Doctor, Detective, Villager. Everyone goes to sleep (closes their eyes) and the moderator wakes up each role to do their job (discover the role of someone else, save someone, etc). The Werewolf wins if they aren’t caught by the end. Otherwise, everyone else wins.

Class Dojo: Students earned points for being quick to be ready with their books, speaking English, raising their hand, and having the longest chain of „D“ words in Word Tennis.

23.09.

Reminder: There is no class on Monday as it is a holiday.

Homework: Pages 7, 8: All. Page 9: Activity 5. Due 30.09.

Warm Up: We played our first Wordwall game. Students spun the wheel and practiced saying irregular verbs in the past tense. We then made example sentences with the verbs in past tense. Example: Yesterday, I ate pizza.

Super Minds: We reviewed what happened in the story on Page 8 then finished reading the story with Page 9. The students persevered through a difficult Activity 3 to answer questions about the story. We learned the word „experiment“. At the end the story, the 3 adventurers‘ experiment goes awry and they walk into a mysterious portal. Where will it take them?

Class Dojo: Students earned points for being quick to be ready with their books, helping with tasks and speaking English.

Reward: We played Geoguessr, a game where you are placed somewhere in the world (Google Streetview coverage) and you must guess where you are. We had a round in Latvia and a round in the Philippines.

21.09.

Homework: I will assign the new homework on Wednesday. We checked last week’s assigned homework, Pages 4-6. The students have a good grasp of the Unit 0 vocabulary and their past tense usage is improving.

Warm Up: We shared about our weekends and played a „Categories“ variant called „Word Tennis“. Students said words beginning with „D“ back and forth and counted how long their streak could get. Our record was hard to say exactly but may have been as high as 45 in our group of 3.

Super Minds: We went through Page 7 of the book, completing Activities 1 and 2. It helped us practice our use of the past tense in a sentence. We also did Page 8 where students created their own story of a science experiment gone wrong using the pictures on the page. We then listened to the story up until the end of Page 8. What will happen to our Time Travelers?

Games: We played „Yesterday I…“. In this game students gather in a circle and pass a ball („Mr. Star“), from one student to the next. The first student says anything they did yesterday (can be made-up), like „Yesterday, I ate pizza“. The next student says what the previous student said and then adds another sentence. This chaining continues until the last student must repeat what everyone said! It’s a good way to practice past tense.

We also played a vocab-review game, „Rock, Paper, Scissors“, that the students had played before. The student were so quick saying the words that I had to make sure they were really saying the words!

Class Dojo: Students earned points for being quick to be ready with their books, speaking English, raising their hand, and having the longest chain of „D“ words in Word Tennis.

Reward: We played Bowling mode in Baamboozle. We played a difficult animal quiz. Did you know lobsters had 10 legs if you include their claws? I didn’t.

21.09.

Homework: I will new homework assign on Wednesday, 23.09. We checked Page 4 assigned last week and the Blue Whales did well.

Warm Up: We shared about our weekends and played a „Categories“ variant called „Word Tennis“. Students said words beginning with „D“ back and forth and counted how long their streak could get. Our record was 33.

Super Minds: We went through Page 7 of the book, completing Activities 1 and 2. It helped us practice our use of the past tense in a sentence.

Reward: We played one round of Geoguessr, but the game was bugged and we couldn’t guess properly. We had a round with Arabic writing which the students recognized. The guessed Saudia Arabia, but it turned out to be not too far away in Jordan.

Class Dojo: Students earned points for being quick to be ready with their books, speaking English, raising their hand, and having the longest chain of „D“ words in Word Tennis.
